Top 5 Winter Prep Tips for Your Camper
As the temperature drops, it’s time to start thinking about winterising your motorhome. Whether you're planning to store your vehicle or take it on a few frosty adventures, prepping it for winter is crucial.
Here are the top 5 winter preparation tips from our expert team at Cambridge Motorhomes.
1. Drain Your Water System
Frozen pipes are a motorhome owner's nightmare. Water expands as it freezes, which can cause pipes to burst and fittings to crack.
- Drain the fresh water tank, boiler and waste tank
- Run taps until all water is expelled
- Use compressed air or antifreeze in extreme cases
2. Check and Charge the Battery
Cold temperatures reduce battery efficiency. A flat battery can leave you stranded or ruin your onboard systems.
- Charge leisure and vehicle batteries fully
- Disconnect if not in use or use a trickle charger
- Check terminals for corrosion and clean if needed
3. Book a Winter Habitation Check
A winter service ensures your heating, seals, and safety systems are all functioning properly.
A Winter Habitation Check includes:
- Inspect for damp and leaks
- Test the heating system
- Check seals and insulation
- Confirm the safety of gas and electric systems
4. Clean and Ventilate
Moisture and stale air can lead to mould and odours.
- Clean the fridge, cupboards and toilet cassette thoroughly
- Leave doors and windows slightly open or install moisture absorbers
5. Protect the Exterior
Your motorhome’s bodywork and tyres also need winter attention.
- Wash and wax the exterior to protect against salt and grime
- Inflate tyres to the correct pressure
- Use covers for tyres, wipers, and vents if in storage
